Take Mass Transit (Bus) to Point Reyes

May 30th, 2008

Much of the West Marin and Point Reyes area is accessible only by car, but if you want to hang out at Stinson Beach, Bolinas, Point Reyes Station, or hike in and out of the Bear Valley Visitor’s Center, you have another option.

As of this writing, the West Marin Stagecoach has daily service (4-5 roundtrips) from San Rafael and Marin City to West Marin. Fares are $2 for Adults and $1 for those under 18 or over 65.

With peak oil upon us, gas is only going to get more expensive. We should start thinking about a return of rail to West Marin.

A light rail system, with an exterior crafted to look like the locomotives from the late 1800′s, but powered by modern, green technology would suit W. Marin perfectly. Imagine the “red” barn returned to its original purpose, stops in Olema, Tomalas, Woodacre, maybe branching off to Inverness and the point… then connecting through Fairax into San Rafeal.

There are some obstacles to surmount, I just hope these can be overcome. Californians were known as progressive thinkers, progressive planners. Recently we have fallen far behind in progressive infrastructure planning. I hope that we can look forward, move past petty, NIMBY like behavior, and do something that would benefit all, locals and visitors.

Great vision, David, I would love to see this. Light rail riding along Sir Francis Drake would be a lovely site.

The people of Marin and California are amazing and given a shared goal, anything is possible. $10 gas may also give it a kick start!
